What is Wi-Fi Network...?

Wi-Fi® or WiFi network is the most familiar type of wireless network used to connect computers and share online access at home or at the office. A WiFi network does not require cabling, but broadcasts network traffic over radio waves. It does this using a central device that is often three components in one: a network hub, router, and high-speed Internet modem. For simplicity we'll refer to this device as a router, though in some cases the router, which has a built-in hub, is purchased separately from the modem.

Each machine on a WiFi network must have an installed WiFi card or an external WiFi adapter. These devices incorporate a receiver and transmitter to send and receive data over the network to the router. Broadcast range varies up to 300 feet (~100m) or more, but is fairly centralized, creating what is termed a local area network (LAN). The WiFi router, cards and adapters use a common language or protocol to communicate that is compliant with a standard known as IEEE802.11.

Within the 802.11 standard there are different generations of protocols, each designated by an additional letter. Generations to date include 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n. The first two flavors are now legacy, but as of spring 2009, 802.11g is still in widespread use with the newer and faster 802.11n on the road to replacing it.

All WiFi components in the network must support the same flavor or generation of 802.11 standards to communicate. If the router only supports 802.11g, the WiFi cards and adapters must also support 802.11g. If the router supports 802.11n, the cards and adapters must also support 802.11n.

Some routers, cards and adapters manufactured during transitional periods between changing standards will be designed to support both the current and the new protocol for maximum flexibility. These devices will be more expensive since the “g” and “n” networks utilize different frequency bands, requiring two radios instead of just one.

Components made for a WiFi network might be certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Certification ensures the product is fully compliant with the standard(s) it supports. Only a wireless network that has certified components is a true Wi-Fi network by technical standards, as Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance. However, “WiFi” or “wifi” has been generalized to mean any wireless network that complies with 802.11 whether components are officially certified or simply marketed as compatible.

When setting up a WiFi network it’s best to use the newest technology available in order to future-proof the investment. For home use, non-certified WiFi components might save a little money and will more than likely do the job just fine. If setting up a wireless network for a business, a true Wi-Fi network with certified components that have been fully tested and are known to be fully compliant might be a more prudent choice.

The 802.11 standards used in a WiFi network differentiate it from other types of wireless communications that use radio waves, such as Bluetooth® networks. Bluetooth uses a weaker, less robust radio band that travels a much shorter distance of up to about 30 feet (~10m). Bluetooth is primarily designed to connect battery-operated personal devices to one another for interoperability, creating a personal area network (PAN). Bluetooth might be used to pass files from a cell phone to a computer, to synchronize a personal digital assistant with a laptop, or to connect a wireless headset with a cell phone or MP3 player.

Different types of Spyware

Different types of Spyware

ParasiteWare
ParasiteWare is the term for any Adware that by default overwrites certain affiliate tracking links. These tracking links are used by webmasters to sell products and to help fund websites. The controversy is centered on companies like WhenU, eBates, and Top Moxie, a popular maker of Adware applications. These companies have release their software to assist users in getting credit for rebates, cash back shopping, or contributions to funds. To the end user ParasiteWare represents little in the way of a security threat.

Adware
Adware, also known as an Adbot, can do a number of things from profile your online surfing and spending habits to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf. In some cases Adware has been bundled (i.e. peer-to-peer file swapping products) with other software without the user's knowledge or slipped in the fine print of a EULA (End User License Agreement). Not all Adware is bad, but often users are annoyed by adware's intrusive behavior. Keep in mind that by removing Adware sometimes the program it came bundled with for free may stop functioning. Some Adware, dubbed a "BackDoor Santa" may not perform any activity other then profile a user's surfing activity for study.

AdWare can be obnoxious in that it performs "drive-by downloads". Drive-by downloads are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other methods of stealth installation. Many times users have no idea they have installed the application. Often Adware makers make their application difficult to uninstall.

A "EULA" or End User License Agreement is the agreement you accept when you click "OK" or "Continue" when you are installing software. Many users never bother to read the EULA.

It is imperative to actually read this agreement before you install any software. No matter how tedious the EULA, you should be able to find out the intent BEFORE you install the software. If you have questions about the EULA- e-mail the company and ask them for clarification.

Spyware
Spyware is potentially more dangerous beast than Adware because it can record your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other
confidential and private information. Spyware is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, a surveillance tool or simply as a tool to spy on users to gain unauthorized access. Spyware is also known as: snoopware, PC surveillance, key logger, system recorders, Parental control software, PC recorder, Detective software and Internet monitoring software.

Spyware covertly gathers user information and activity without the user's knowledge. Spy software can record your keystrokes as you type them, passwords, credit card numbers, sensitive information, where you surf, chat logs, and can even take random screenshots of your activity. Basically whatever you do on the computer is completely viewable by the spy. You do not have to be connected to the Internet to be spied upon.

The latest permutations of Spyware include the use of routines to mail out user activity via e-mail or posting information to the web where the spy can view it at their leisure. Also many spyware vendors use "stealth routines" and "polymorphic" (meaning to change" techniques to avoid detection and removal by popular anti-spy software. In some cases Spyware vendors have went as far as to counter-attack anti-spy packages by attempting to break their use. In addition they may use routines to re-install the spyware application after it has been detected.

Malware
Malware is slang for malicious software. Malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system. A trojan horse , worm or a virus could be classified as Malware. Some advertising software can be malicious in that it can try to re-install itself after you remove it.

For the purpose of simplicity Malware is software specifically engineered to damage your machine or interrupt the normal computing environment.

Examples of Malware include:

Page Hijackers
Hijackers are applications that attempt to usurp control of the user's home page and reset it with one of the hijackers choosing. They are a low security threat, but obnoxious. Most Hijackers use stealth techniques or trick dialogue boxes to perform installation.

Dialers
A dialer is a type of software used by pornographic vendors. Once dialer software is downloaded the user is disconnected from their modem's usual Internet service provider and another phone number and the user is billed. While dialers do not spy on users they are malevolent in nature because they can cause huge financial harm to the victim.

              Then Press Call Button
              Eg:*567*9961xxxxxx*50#

Put An Icon For CD's/DVD's &USB

How to put an Icon for your CD's/DVD and your USB sticks (Pen drive) ?

Steps:-

1. Open Notepad From Start --> All Programs -- >Accessories --> Notepad

Type the Following in the Notepad

2. [AUTORUN]
                ICON= your file name.ICO

3.    Save as Autorun.inf and copy your icon file and Autorun.inf to USB or Burn
        with your CD.

If you are using Pen drive just remove and insert again it works well.

Steps for removing Worm winf.exe

I came across a worm by name winf.exe. Most of you may know this worm it changes the drive icon to a nasty looking image and label to weird looking charachters. Even if you want to change the label or the icon you wont be able to do it. This worm mostly comes through the USB devices. When You double click on it this virus copies a autorun.inf file and a thb.ico file to all your drives and there you go all icons, labels changed!! Not only that it copies file win.exe and avgs.exe to your system32 folder and it will be added to a particular place in registry for launching it during startup.

You might have a question what this to program files do? Well you might have experienced this "when you type orkut or youtube " in your browser a message box pops up and tells orkut and youtube infected by virus not only that it closes your browser also, Great rite. Some time it may play a laughing sound also.

Well what exactly this so called virus is???

Its not a virus. Surprised??? its a script written using autohotkey software. You can get this software here www.autohotkey.com/download. This software was actually created to automate repetitive task and improve windows user interface but some people are using it to create nasty programs and trouble others.

This worm consists of a set of file including source code for the same !! and packed into a SFX archive using winrar, so that it can be extracted to required location when user double click on USB device. The icon of SFX archive is removed so that it is not easily seen since only file name is visible.

How to bring back the drive icon and label back to normal?

Manual

  1. launch task manager
  2. find processes win.exe and avgs.exe runnig under your user name
  3. Terminate these processes.
  4. now launch command prompt and type following commands

C:\Documents and Settings\VASUDEV>cd\

C:\>del \ah /F [/A: H] autorun.inf thb.ico

repeat this process in each drive. If you have some PC maintaining software check the startup program list if win.exe or avgs.exe remove those entries and do a restart. Now the drive should return to normal. Now scan the system using antivirus software. I suggest using avast's boot time scan on C drive, it will delete all infected files.

This is method i used to remove the virus from my system.

To avoid getting infected by this nasty worm and other similar worms- "Do not double click on your pendrive on any day try to use address bar to access pendrive".

Also use this small but very effective software USB Disk securtiy, mere 1MB software but detects any autorun program including winf.exe as soon as you insert USB device. Home page for this software is http://www.zbshareware.com/.
